PLANNING CHALLENGES
Kensington Court is a vibrant and diverse mixture of residences and businesses, with Thackeray Street at the heart of its community. The challenge is to preserve this balance. If we have too few shops, services and restaurants, the neighbourhood turns into a soulless residential ghetto. Too many and it stops being a nice place to live in. It would be pleasant also not to have too much development going on, with endless skips, noise, dirt and congestion. So one of the main jobs of the Association is to keep a vigilant watch on planning applications and the construction headaches they bring with them.
Currently, given the ever-increasing price of property in Kensington, the biggest problem is preventing developers and landlords converting businesses into luxury dwellings. These, as likely as not, will then lie empty for most of the year, only occasionally visited by their absentee owners.
Without enough residents, communities die. We don’t want that to happen to Kensington Court.
